Reopening Safely: Business and Investment Opportunities in Malaysia
Malaysia is known for its multicultural diversity. Strategically located in Southeast Asia, it is one of the fastest growing economies in the Asia-Pacific region.
Malaysia’s GDP of US$336.7 billion in 2020 ranks alongside Singapore and the Philippines. Its 32 million population and ever rising GDP per capita of US$10,909 making it an attractive market for investors and exporters. Being part of the AANZFTA, Malaysia is often one of New Zealand’s top ten trading partners. The upcoming RCEP agreement in 2022 will ensure this trend continues.
Beyond trade, Malaysia is also known to be a hub for some New Zealand businesses. It takes less than half the time to start a business in Malaysia as compared to the Southeast Asia regional average. As recovery strategy, Malaysia is opening up further to encourage businesses to engage and invest. Various schemes are provided including for example business travellers’ exemption of quarantine if the trip is less than 14 days.
