Professor Siah Hwee Ang
Director
Professor Siah Hwee Ang is the Director of the Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence. He is also Professor of International Business and Strategy, the inaugural Bank of New Zealand Chair in Business in Asia at Victoria University of Wellington, and chairs Victoria University’s Enabling Our Asia-Pacific Trading Nation Distinctiveness Theme. He writes bi-weekly columns for www.interest.co.nz and www.stuff.co.nz on business in China and Asia respectively.
Previously Siah was Professor in Strategy and Associate Dean Postgraduate and International at the University of Auckland Business School. Siah has researched at Cass Business School, City University in London, and holds a PhD in Management awarded at the National University of Singapore, where he was both a teaching and research fellow.
Siah’s main research interests are in the areas of alliances and acquisitions, competition, technology strategy, international business strategy, reputation and international and strategic human resource management. Siah’s works have been published in international top-tier journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management and Journal of Management Studies. He has written two books, one on international business and the other on business and management research designs. Five research awards are testimony to quality research work by Siah.
Siah is Senior Editor of Strategy, Institutions and Research Design of the Journal of World Business, a leading international business journal. He also sits on the editorial board of seven other international journals, and has been on the editorial board of the Academy of Management Journal, a prestigious journal for six years. Siah has also been the Assistant Editor of Long Range Planning for six years. He served on the NZ’s Performance Based Research Fund Business and Economics panel (2012), NZ’s Marsden Fund Economics, Human and Behavioural Sciences Panel (2015-2018), Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia panel (2016-2018) and Prime Minister’s Business Scholarships (2018).
Siah teaches strategy, international business, and research design and methods courses at the executive, postgraduate and undergraduate levels. He has supervised over 75 postgraduate students and has published papers with a number of them. He is actively engaged in executive education and projects, working and has worked with executives from Fonterra, Fletcher Building, Fairfax Media, Cranleigh Merchant Bankers, BioPacificVentures, TCI Network (Spain), Ernst & Young (Germany), Civil Service College (Singapore), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand Customs Service, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, AucklandPlus, Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, TV New Zealand, Genesis Energy, and New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants.
